What are you thinking?
What are the thoughts swirling around in your mind?
Do you hear the whispers? The nudges to do things that you know are not the best options for you? The judgements that stop you from doing what you want to do or what you know is best, do you notice them?
Your thoughts direct your world, your feelings, your choices. How aware are you of what directions your quietly scheming brain is sending you?
A simple “that was stupid”, “they didn’t like that” or “you’re not a good person” could just about ruin your day.
Our emotional brain’s job is to tend to our survival which it does by sending us messages about how to behave. Unfortunately, these ‘keep us safe’ messages have not been updated since our ancestors were cavemen, so they are often unhelpful for life in the 21st century.
Yet we still obey them.
Shine a light on your inner voices
Take some time to listen to your inner voices. Just listening to them does not make them more powerful – quite the opposite, it can take their negative power away. So, stop and entertain them for a moment. Imagine shining a light on them. As you become familiar with these voices, you can change them. Don’t invest your energy fighting with them, that gives them power. Instead, just listen and choose to follow a different voice.
To learn more about how your brain drives your behaviour and how to manage its negative tendencies, join us for our next Rewired to Relate programme starting 4 May 2021.
You will also learn why wellbeing and self-care are essential. Feedback from participants tells us that they found the programme essential for navigating these trying times.People need peopleCreating a new normal? Gamify it!
